A step and repeat is a printed backdrop covered in a repeating pattern of logos, set up where guests are photographed at a gala, launch or press event, so every photo carries the host's and sponsors' names. The common sizes are 8 x 8 ft and 8 x 10 ft. At typical market prices checked October 2026, an 8 x 8 ft backdrop costs about $194 to $218 for the print alone and about $320 to $390 with a stand, from 8 x 8 to 8 x 10 ft.
The backdrop ends up in every photo taken that night, so it is worth getting the size, the finish and the logo layout right. This guide covers each of them.
What is a step and repeat?
It is a backdrop, usually 8 ft tall, printed with logos in a tight repeating pattern. Guests step onto a marked spot, pause for photographers, and move on. Because the logos repeat, any crop of the photo, from a full-length shot to a tight head and shoulders, still shows at least one of them. That is why sponsors ask for one: the photos travel on social media and in press coverage long after the event.
Step and repeat walls appear at galas and benefits, product launches, premieres, press conferences, campaign events, conferences and weddings. Our gala printing guide shows where the backdrop fits in a full event print schedule.
What size step and repeat do I need?
An 8 x 8 ft backdrop suits individuals and couples photographed at close range; choose 8 x 10 ft or wider when groups pose together or photographers shoot from further back.
| Size | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 8 x 8 ft | Individuals and couples, press walls in small rooms | The most common entry size |
| 8 x 10 ft | Small groups, red carpet arrivals | Gives photographers room to step back |
| Two or three retractable stands | Small budgets and repeat use at shows | About 5.5 to 8 ft wide in total; the gaps between stands show in photos |
Height matters as much as width. An 8 ft backdrop clears the head of a tall guest in heels with room to spare, so the wall behind does not show at the top of the frame.
Vinyl or fabric: which is better for a step and repeat?
Fabric is the usual choice for indoor events, and matte vinyl is the choice when the backdrop goes outdoors or gets heavy handling. Whichever you pick, the finish has to be matte: a glossy surface throws camera flash straight back and blows out the logos.
| Material | Strengths | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Polyester fabric | No glare, hangs smoothly, packs without permanent creases, photographs well under lights | Indoor use; needs a frame that keeps it taut |
| Matte vinyl | Weather resistant, stands up to handling and outdoor use | Store it rolled, because folds leave creases; never order a glossy finish |

How much does a step and repeat cost?
An 8 x 8 ft step and repeat costs about $194 to $218 for the printed backdrop alone, and about $320 with an adjustable stand, at typical market prices checked October 2026. The stand is roughly 40 percent of the total.
| Size | Backdrop only | With stand |
|---|---|---|
| 8 x 8 ft | about $194 to $218 | about $320 |

Prices shown are typical market prices for standard options, based on published prices from national print retailers and online printers, checked October 2026. They are a guide, not a quote. Prices are subject to change and do change with quantity, paper, finishing and turnaround, so contact us for an updated quote.
These ranges are based on published list prices at online sign printers such as Signs.com, BuildASign and 4over4, including Signs.com's step and repeat banners and 4over4's step and repeat banners. They are for one backdrop at standard turnaround, before shipping and tax. One 8 x 10 ft with-stand figure is a backdrop plus the frame offered with it at checkout. BuildASign was running a sale when checked, and the ranges use its list prices. Vinyl-only prices were thin: the 4over4 starting price covers both vinyl and fabric.
What moves the price:
- Size: 8 x 10 ft costs more than 8 x 8 ft, and wider walls more again.
- Stand: a new adjustable frame and case adds roughly $157 to $192. Reusing a stand you already own saves the most.
- Material: fabric or vinyl, and whether the fabric is premium grade.
- Turnaround: rush costs more than standard.
- Shipping: online prices exclude it. We deliver free anywhere in Manhattan.
What color should a step and repeat background be?
A mid to dark background in a matte finish is the safe choice for most events, as long as the logos stand out clearly against it. On a white wall, the photographer's flash throws a hard shadow of every guest onto the backdrop, and the shadow shows in each photo. A darker color hides it.
- Think about what guests will wear. At a black tie event, a black backdrop swallows dinner jackets and dresses; navy, deep gray or a brand color keeps people separate from the wall.
- Use the version of each logo made for dark backgrounds, usually a white or one-color reverse, rather than a full-color logo with a white box around it.
- Keep the background a single flat color. Gradients and photos behind the logos make the pattern hard to read in a cropped shot.
How should logos be laid out on a step and repeat?
Lay the logos out in a staggered pattern, like bricks in a wall, so that each row is offset from the one above and a logo falls behind every guest wherever the photo is cropped.
- Alternate the host's logo with sponsor logos, so the host appears in every frame.
- Size the logos so that two or three complete ones fit in a head and shoulders photo. Logos that are too large get cut off; logos that are too small turn into texture.
- Concentrate the pattern between chest height and just above head height, which is where most photos are cropped.
- Send vector logos (AI, EPS, SVG or PDF) from each sponsor, not images copied from a website.
- Get sponsor approval of the final layout in writing before it prints, especially the order and size of each logo.
Design help is available if you would rather we build the pattern from your logos.
How far ahead should you order a step and repeat?
Order it two weeks before the event, together with the rest of the signage. Standard turnaround for most print is two to three business days and rush is 24 to 48 hours on most products, but sponsor logos and approvals take longer than printing. We deliver free anywhere in Manhattan, and a same-day courier is available to get a finished backdrop to the venue.
Set the backdrop up once before the event, in the actual room, and take a test photo with flash from where the photographer will stand. That one photo catches glare, a missing pole, a logo hidden behind a stanchion, and a backdrop that is shorter than the tallest guest, while there is still time to fix them.
