A custom wall calendar is a standard 8.5 x 11 inch book that opens to 11 x 17, with a picture on the top page and the month grid below, bound with wire-o or saddle stitch and drilled to hang. For a 2027 calendar to reach clients before January 1, finalize the photos and dates by mid-November and order by the end of the month.
The format matters more than the design. A calendar only earns its cost if it ends up somewhere the client looks every day, so choose the format for where it will live.
Which kind of custom calendar should a business print?
| Format | Typical size | How it is bound or mounted | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wall calendar | 8.5 x 11 in closed, 11 x 17 in open | Wire-o or saddle stitch, drilled to hang | Office walls, kitchens, back rooms |
| Desk calendar | Commonly around 5.5 x 8.5 in | Tent style, stands on its own | Reception desks, counters, workstations |
| Magnetic calendar | Postcard size or smaller | All twelve months on one magnet | Fridges and filing cabinets |
| Wall planner | 18 x 24 or 24 x 36 in | Single sheet, rolled | Offices that plan a year at a glance |
For most client gifts the wall calendar is the default, because it carries a full page of branding for every month. Magnetic calendars suit businesses that want the phone number on the fridge, such as restaurants, home services and medical practices. Desk calendars work for clients who sit at a desk all day.
Should the calendar run 12 or 13 months?
Choose 13 months if the calendar is handed out in December. A 13-month calendar usually starts with December 2026, so it is useful from the day it arrives instead of sitting in a drawer until January. A 12-month calendar is fine when it lands in the last days of December or is given out in January.
Wire-o or saddle stitch?
Wire-o is the better binding for a wall calendar, because the pages flip cleanly over the top and lie flat against the wall. Saddle stitch, which staples the pages through the fold, costs less on large runs and is drilled for a nail.
- Wire-o: flips fully, hangs from the wire or a drilled hole, survives a year of turning. The usual choice for client gifts.
- Saddle stitch: economical at volume, folds flat for mailing. Page count must be a multiple of four.
- Page count: each month takes two pages, a picture and a grid, so a twelve-month wall calendar usually comes to 28 pages once the covers are included.

Which 2027 dates need checking?
Check every holiday against an official source before approving the proof. A wrong date printed on five hundred calendars is a full reprint. Several 2027 federal holidays fall on a weekend and are observed on a different day, which is exactly where mistakes creep in.
| Holiday | 2027 date | Observed |
|---|---|---|
| New Year's Day | Friday, January 1 | |
| Martin Luther King Jr. Day | Monday, January 18 | |
| Washington's Birthday | Monday, February 15 | |
| Memorial Day | Monday, May 31 | |
| Juneteenth | Saturday, June 19 | Friday, June 18 |
| Independence Day | Sunday, July 4 | Monday, July 5 |
| Labor Day | Monday, September 6 | |
| Columbus Day | Monday, October 11 | |
| Veterans Day | Thursday, November 11 | |
| Thanksgiving Day | Thursday, November 25 | |
| Christmas Day | Saturday, December 25 | Friday, December 24 |
Source: OPM federal holidays. If your clients observe religious or cultural holidays, add them deliberately and check each date against a calendar from that tradition rather than a website's list.
Proof the grids, not just the pictures. The errors that reach print are a month starting on the wrong weekday because a grid was copied from last year's file, a February with 29 days in a year that has 28, and a holiday marked on its actual date when the office closes on the observed one. Go through each month against a real 2027 calendar before you approve.
What should a business put on its calendar?
Put your phone number and website on every month, not only on the cover. The cover is seen once. The month pages are what the client looks at for 365 days.
- Photography: your own work, your neighborhood, or your team, rather than generic stock that could belong to anyone.
- Dates that matter to your clients: filing deadlines for an accounting firm, seasonal menus for a restaurant, renewal reminders for an insurance broker.
- Space to write: grids with room in each day get used. Grids crammed with holidays and moon phases get admired once.
When should custom calendars be ordered for January?
Order by the end of November. Production itself is quick, but binding adds time, and calendars have to be packed and shipped or hand-delivered during the busiest weeks of the year.
- Early November: choose the format and gather photos at full resolution, not screenshots or social media downloads.
- Mid-November: proof approved, with every grid checked.
- Late November: printed and bound.
- Early December: delivered or mailed, alongside your corporate holiday cards if you are sending both.
How much does it cost to mail a wall calendar?
More than a card. USPS letters can be no more than 6.125 inches high, so an 8.5 x 11 inch wall calendar mails as a large envelope, which USPS calls a flat, at a higher price than a letter. The size limits are in the USPS Domestic Mail Manual, section 201. Desk calendars usually mail in a box. Magnetic calendars that fit a standard envelope are the cheapest to send.
If many of your clients are in Manhattan, hand delivery is often the better gift. We deliver free anywhere in Manhattan, so calendars can come to your office in bulk for your team to drop off in person.
Custom calendar questions
When should I order custom calendars for 2027?
By the end of November. That leaves time to proof the grids, bind the calendars and deliver them in early December, so they are on the wall by January 1.
What size is a standard wall calendar?
8.5 x 11 inches closed, opening to 11 x 17 inches, with a picture page above the month grid. A 12 x 12 inch square format is also common.
Is wire-o or saddle stitch better for a calendar?
Wire-o for wall calendars meant to last the year, because the pages flip cleanly and lie flat. Saddle stitch costs less on large runs.
What is a 13-month calendar?
A calendar that starts with December of the current year, so it can be used immediately when it is given in December.
Can each calendar be personalized?
Yes. Variable data printing can put a different name or message on each calendar from a spreadsheet, which works well for top-client gifts.
