A die-cut sticker is cut through both the sticker and its paper backing, so the finished piece is the shape of your artwork. A kiss-cut sticker is cut through the sticker layer only, so it peels off a larger backing that stays square or rectangular. Once applied, the two look identical. The difference is in how they are handed out, sold and peeled.
Choose die-cut when each sticker travels on its own, as a giveaway or tucked into an order. Choose kiss-cut when you want a border of backing to print on, several designs on one sheet, or a detailed shape that would be awkward to peel.
What is the difference between die-cut and kiss-cut stickers?
The depth of the cut. A die-cut blade goes through the face material, the adhesive and the liner. A kiss-cut blade stops at the liner, barely touching it, which is where the name comes from.
| Cut | What you hand over | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Die-cut | A sticker with backing the same shape as the design | Giveaways, laptop and water bottle stickers, order inserts | Spiky points and narrow gaps can tear, and the backing edge is hard to find on small shapes |
| Kiss-cut | A sticker on a square or rectangular backing with a visible border | Retail packs, a message or barcode printed on the backing, intricate shapes | Takes more room in a pocket or envelope |
| Sticker sheet | Several kiss-cut designs on one backing | Sticker packs, kids' sets, brand kits, staff labeling sets | Every design on the sheet shares one material and finish |
| Kiss-cut on a roll | Stickers wound on a core, peeled one after another | Applying hundreds by hand or from a dispenser | For product use, see our labels guide instead |
Which is easier to peel?
Kiss-cut. The border of backing gives you a corner to bend back, so the sticker lifts without a fingernail. On a die-cut sticker you have to find the seam between face and liner along the edge. That is easy on a 3 inch circle and frustrating on a small star or a script logo.
Kiss-cut stickers also protect their own edges in a bag or a pocket, and the backing gives you space for a website, a care line or a barcode if you sell them.
Does die-cut or kiss-cut cost more?
Neither is automatically cheaper. Price follows size, quantity, material and how complicated the cut path is. A kiss-cut sticker uses more backing material per piece, and a die-cut run takes longer to separate and pack. If you are unsure, ask for both on one quote and compare.
Which sticker material should you choose?
Pick the material for where the sticker will live, then pick the cut.
| Material | What it looks like | Use it for | Outdoors? |
|---|---|---|---|
| White vinyl | Opaque full color, gloss or matte | Logo stickers, laptops, bottles, giveaways | Yes, in UV-stable vinyl, with optional laminate |
| Clear film | Transparent, so unprinted areas show the surface | Glass doors, windows, bottles, light packaging | Depends on the film and adhesive; say where it is going |
| Holographic film | Rainbow prismatic finish that shifts with the light | Merch, launches, event giveaways | Ask before ordering for outdoor use |
| Bumper sticker vinyl | Weatherproof vinyl rated for vehicle exteriors | Cars, campaign stickers, outdoor equipment | Yes, it is made for it |
| Paper | Matte or gloss paper face | Short-life uses: envelope seals, event badges, bag closures | No, it tears and stains when wet |
Why clear stickers need a white layer
Ink on clear film is translucent. Light colors and thin type fade into a dark bottle or tinted glass. Clear stickers with solid color need a white underprint beneath the areas that must be opaque, so mark which parts of the design should be solid when you send the artwork.
How should you set up a sticker cut file?
- Send vector artwork (PDF, AI or EPS), or an image at 300 DPI at final size.
- Draw the cut line as a single closed path on its own layer, in a spot color named CutContour or Cut. No cut line? Say so, and it can be drawn during the free file check.
- Extend the background 1/8 inch past the cut line as bleed, so a small shift never leaves a white sliver.
- Keep text and logos at least 1/8 inch inside the cut line.
- Give complex shapes a smooth border of at least 1/8 inch, so the cut path does not trace every point and gap.
- Outline fonts and work in CMYK, as described in our print-ready files guide.
The sticker problem we see most is a cut line that hugs the artwork too tightly. A blade cannot follow every hair, spike and gap between letters cleanly, and those thin points tear when someone peels them. A smooth offset border, even a thin one, gives a clean edge and a sticker that lasts. The second is a clear sticker designed on a white artboard: perfect on screen, invisible on a dark bottle. Put a photo of the real surface behind the design before you approve the proof.
Which cut suits bumper stickers and campaign stickers?
Bumper stickers are usually rectangles in weatherproof vinyl, often laminated against sun and scratches, and a straight die-cut is the norm. Campaign stickers and decals for canvassers work well kiss-cut on sheets or rolls, because volunteers can peel them fast at a door or a rally.
For federal races, the FEC does not require a paid-for-by disclaimer on bumper stickers, pins, buttons and similar small items where it cannot be conveniently printed. See the FEC guidance on advertising and disclaimers. State and local races follow their own rules, so check with the campaign's counsel. More on campaign print is in our campaign printing guide.
When should a sticker be a label instead?
When it goes on a product you sell. Labels on jars, bottles and cosmetics need materials rated for moisture, oil and refrigeration, they often carry required text, and they are usually ordered on rolls. That decision is covered in our guide to roll and sheet product labels.
Sticker questions
What is the difference between die-cut and kiss-cut stickers?
A die-cut sticker is cut through the backing, so the whole piece is the shape of the design. A kiss-cut sticker is cut through the sticker only and peels off a larger backing.
Are kiss-cut stickers easier to peel?
Yes. The border of backing gives you an edge to bend back, which helps most on small or detailed shapes.
Can I put several designs on one sheet?
Yes. That is a sticker sheet: several designs kiss-cut onto one backing, all in the same material.
Which stickers last outdoors?
Vinyl rated for outdoor use, with a laminate for extra protection from sun and scratches. Paper stickers are for indoor and short-term use.
How long do custom stickers take?
Most print takes two to three business days after proof approval, with 24 to 48 hour rush on most products. Special films and custom dies can take longer, so mention your date when you ask for a quote.
